Welcome to The Setup Loft

We started The Setup Loft because most of the setup internet is trying to sell you something, and you can feel it. The “Top 10” lists are stitched together from Amazon copy nobody verified. The same five products get dropshipped under a dozen different discount codes. Plenty of YouTubers just read the spec sheet out loud and call it a review.

And the whole time, there’s a community of people who’ll lose an entire evening to monitor-arm research, who have real opinions about switch springs, who treat their desk as something they’re designing rather than a place they happen to sit. Nobody was writing for them with much care. We wanted to.

Who we’re for

Software developers first. Then designers, creators, remote-working professionals, and the gamers who take it seriously. The thread connecting all of you isn’t a budget or a job title, it’s that you actually care how your setup performs, how it looks, and how it feels to spend ten hours a day inside it. First build or fifth refinement, you’re in the right place.

We’re probably not your site if you just want the cheapest thing that technically works, or if your whole design philosophy is “more RGB,” or if the goal is to clone some influencer’s desk down to the cable clips. That’s genuinely fine. There’s plenty of internet for that.

What we publish

Three kinds of thing, really.

The first is reviews and buying guides, where we test what we recommend and say so plainly when something isn’t worth the money. The Loft Approved badge isn’t decoration. It means we lived with the product for at least four weeks and we’d spend our own money on it at the price we’re pointing you toward. We’ll write the unflattering version too. “We tried this and we’d skip it” is the sentence affiliate sites can’t bring themselves to publish, and we’ll run it whenever it’s true.

The second is featured setups, every week: real readers, real desks, with our honest read on what makes each one work. This is the community half of the brand, and the submission flow ships with our apps.

The third is the occasional opinion piece or field guide, for when we’ve got a position worth arguing or a framework worth writing down. Those come slower, on purpose. We’d rather publish two pieces a month you remember than ten you scroll straight past.

How we stay honest

Honesty is the entire point, so it’s worth saying the rules out loud. We’ve watched other publications lose the room over exactly this (Hodinkee is the one that still stings), and we’d rather you be able to hold us to it:

• Loft Approved is earned every single time. No shortcuts, no favors.
• Affiliate relationships get disclosed where you can see them, not buried in a footer.
• Review units get disclosed inline, the first time the product comes up.
• Pay-for-placement is never on the table, for any number.
• We go back and update articles when products change. A stale “Best of 2024” list quietly rotting at the top of search is how these sites lose your trust.
• Editorial control stays with us. Not for a sponsorship, not for early access, not for anything.

If any of that ever changes, you’ll read about it on the front page, not in the fine print.

What’s next

A few guides land this month: ultrawide monitors, standing desks under a grand, and our first proper mechanical keyboard roundup. The Mac and Windows apps arrive later this year, and that’s where the community submission flow will live.
